The IPL 2022 season came to an end with Gujarat Titans beating Rajasthan Royals in the final to win their maiden IPL title. Hardik Pandya became the fourth Indian captain to win an IPL title. In the process, he added his name to the long list of potential candidates who can be the future Indian captain.
Cricket experts were amazed by the way he led his team in pressure situations. His performance in the final helped him cap off his best season in the IPL so far.
Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders, the teams with multiple IPL titles to their names ended their campaign at the bottom of the points table. Meanwhile, in this article, we rate the performance of all the captains in IPL 2022.
IPL 2022: Rating Performance Of All Captains Out Of 10
Mayank Agarwal- Punjab Kings: 3/10
Mayank was perhaps the worst captain among all the 10 different leaders. He had no clue as to what he was doing as a captain. He had some of the best players in his side but he failed them properly for the sake of his team. He scored the least runs with the bat among all the 10 captains. He might well be removed as captain next season.

Rohit Sharma- Mumbai Indians: 3/10
This was Rohit’s worst season as Mumbai Indians captain. He struggled with the bat and also struggled to pick a proper combination of players. Sometimes they played with three overseas players while sometimes four. He just could not find the settling combination which in turn hurt his team’s chances this season. Mumbai lost nine games this season, the most they lost in any season.
Kane Williamson- Sunrisers Hyderabad: 5 / 10
Kane Williamson endured one of the worst seasons in the IPL both with the bat and as a captain. Like Shreyas Iyer, he also could not use the players to their best potential. Being a reputed international captain, he showed the chinks in his armour when it came to leading an IPL franchise.
Shreyas Iyer- Kolkata Knight Riders: 5/10
KKR made 21 changes in the playing XI and Shreyas Iyer was all at sea as the captain of the side, He was very dependent on Andre Russell and Sunil Narine to get the job every time and failed to extract the best out of his players.
He had a 400-plus season with the bat but as a captain, he had very little to offer to the team. By revealing the news regarding the CEO’s involvement in team selection, he hinted at the issues that the management had within themselves.
Rishabh Pant- Delhi Capitals: 6/10
Pant had an indifferent season as a captain for Delhi Capitals. This was his second year as a captain with the club and he has a lot to learn especially with the batting order. He has taken a few hasty decisions as captain and against Rajasthan Royals, he lost his cool as captain which was childish to see. With the bat, he just could not take the pressure in at all.
Faf du Plessis- Royal Challengers Bangalore: 7/10
Sanjay Manrekar said in a conversation with ESPN Cricinfo that Faf was better as a captain that Virat Kohli for RCB. It was very much due to his experience that he helped RCB win five of their first seven games. They then lost a few games on the trot which hampered their campaign but Faf’s tactical nuances were on show. It is expected that he will return as a better captain next season.
KL Rahul- Lucknow Super Giants: 7/10
Interestingly, Lucknow lost all their games against the teams which made the playoffs. This means he did not have good plans against the best teams in the IPL. Tactically both captain and as a batsman, he was found wanting on various occasions throughout the season. He was good at the start as captain but his tactical shortcomings were on view in the crunch games.
Sanju Samson- Rajasthan Royals: 9/10
The Royals were the second-best team in the IPL 2022 season. This also means that whatever decisions Sanju Samson took as captain most of them worked throughout the season. At times, when it didn’t, they found themselves at the opposite end of the result. He also scored nearly 500 runs with the bat batting at number three.
Hardik Pandya- Gujarat Titans: 10/10
Hardik led his team with a cool and calm demeanour. He repeatedly spoke about the contribution of his players in the success of his team. The Indian all-rounder kept himself far from any controversy and delivered with both bat and ball when the team needed the most. It is hard to pinpoint any mistake in his captaincy this season.
