Delhi Capitals have been privileged to have a strong Indian contingent in the recent IPL seasons but still haven’t managed to win their maiden IPL title yet. They came very close in the 2020 edition but still have been lacking the final press and they will now have to rebuild the excellent set of players they had.

Delhi has opted for Rishabh Pant as the captain of the franchise in the upcoming seasons after his impressive stint in 2021 while their second and third retentions will be Prithvi Shaw and all-rounder Axar Patel. They have also taken the right option in picking Nortje ahead of Rabada who has looked slightly out of socks. Here are 3 big players who won’t be retained by Delhi Capitals.

IPL 2022 Retention: 3 Big Players Who Won’t Be Retained By Delhi Capitals

Shreyas Iyer:

Shreyas Iyer has been one of the architects in rebuilding the Delhi Capitals and taking the side forward in the last three to four years. The right-hander took over the captaincy in 2018 replacing Gautam Gambhir and he has led the side to the playoffs in 2019 and the finals in the 2020 season.

Iyer faced a shoulder injury prior to the 2021 IPL season in India and he was ruled out of the entire season for at least three months. Rishabh Pant captained the franchise in absence of Iyer and he did taste success which has left Delhi with no choice in continuing with the wicketkeeper as captain. Iyer has opted to move out of the franchise as per reports to be in the lead roles again.

Shikhar Dhawan:

Shikhar Dhawan has been the man in form for the Delhi Capitals in the last two IPL seasons especially and has taken his game to the next level. He has worked particularly on his strike rate and it has yielded him much better results as he has been in the top five places of the Orange cap in the last two editions.

Dhawan did not feature in the Indian squad for the T20 World cup 2021 and his age might be one of the concerns for teams. He is 35 at the moment and it is going to be tough from here on, but he is looking at his prime best in IPL at the moment.

Kagiso Rabada:

Kagiso Rabada was the standout bowler in the IPL 2020 when the Delhi franchise reached the finals and he won the purple cap as well. The South African quick has been a huge asset to the side in terms of his wicket-taking abilities and also executing his yorkers to perfection.

However, he has been a shadow of himself in this season with not many wickets under his belt and hasn’t been anywhere near his best. Delhi Capitals have been tremendously awarded the inclusion of Anrich Nortje and they are highly likely to go in with Nortje ahead of Rabada.
