IPL 2022: No Doubt About It - Ricky Ponting Convinced That Rishabh Pant Will Be A Successful International Captain
Delhi Capitals (DC) head coach Ricky Ponting has no doubts in his mind regarding the elevation of wicket-keeper batter, Rishabh Pant, as a successful captain of Team India in the coming years.
Pant is being groomed as a likely successor once Rohit Sharma decides to hang up his boots. The 24-year-old southpaw will be leading DC in the IPL 2022 season and the experiences he gains there will certainly help him in the future, as per Ponting.
“With some experience in a role like this in such a high-pressure tournament like the IPL, you know, I’ve got no doubt in years to come there is every chance that Rishabh could be an international captain. No doubt about it,” Pant said during a media interaction.
“It will just keep helping Pant become a better leader” – Ricky Ponting on DC stint
Ponting added that Pant has matured in the last few months, especially after taking over Shreyas Iyer as the skipper of DC. He has assumed the responsibility in the team and has changed his role in the batting order as well.
“This is my fifth season now here and the evolution of Rishabh as a player and as a person has been quite dramatic. The last couple of years with some more responsibility in and around the Indian team, obviously captaining Delhi Capitals last season, there’s a lot of learning experiences for him.”
“It will just keep helping him become a better leader and a better person on a daily basis. There’s no doubt that his maturity over the last 12 or 18 months (not only) with his play but also with his leadership and captaincy has been outstanding,” Ponting added.
DC faces off against Mumbai Indians (MI) in their opening game on Sunday.
