IPL 2022: Rishabh Pant Needs Honest Feedback From Ricky Ponting On His Captaincy: Michael Vaughan
Delhi Capitals won their last game against Kolkata Knight Riders courtesy of Rovman Powell’s fine knock in the end overs and a brilliant spell by Kuldeep Yadav against his former team. But yet, Rishabh Pant’s captaincy was under the scanner and former English captain, Michael Vaughan too wasn’t happy with how Pant led the side.
Vaughan on Cricbuzz said that Pant needs to have conversations with head coach Ricky Ponting and understand where he can improve as a young captain.
He Had A Chance To Get His Team Over The Line, But He Couldn’t Do That Either: Michael Vaughan
Rishabh Pant failed with the bat too. His side was not chasing a big target. He came into bat at number 5 but got out to Umesh Yadav and left his team in a tricky position.
It was the partnership between Rovman Powell and Axar Patel which got DC home.
In terms of captaincy, Pant didn’t utilise Kuldeep Yadav’s full quota of overs, despite Kuldeep picking 4 wickets in his 3 overs. He instead went with Lalit Yadav who was taken for 32 runs in his 3 overs in a low scoring game. Lalit bowled in front of Nitish Rana whose record is pretty good against right-arm off-spinners despite being a left-handed batter.
“I hear that expression all the time (about a captain’s innings). It shouldn’t be a captain’s innings but just an innings… an innings that the game requires you to play at that particular moment.
“Pant owed his team an innings with the way he captained. I’m not going to keep picking on him but he’s a young captain who needs to learn.”
“I hope he is sensible enough to analyze and go into his room, and bring Ricky Ponting in and some other coaches to ask for honest feedback”, Vaughan said on the show on Cricbuzz.
“It’s the way you learn as a captain. It’s not being aggressive to Rishabh and telling him ‘You must do this but really good captains at their infancy stages ask for advice on their tactics.
“He isn’t getting the right information if one of them at least doesn’t sit with him and say, ‘Rishabh you’ve got that wrong. He had a chance to get his team over the line but didn’t manage to do that either. Not a great night for Rishabh but he got the two points,” he further added.
Pant has used Lalit Yadav at stages where he didn’t need to use his 6th bowling option at all. In several games now, one of the main bowlers doesn’t bowl their full quota, in earlier games, Shardul Thakur did not complete his full quota of 4 overs and in the last game, it was Chetan Shakariya and Kuldeep Yadav who didn’t complete their full quota, despite bowling well in their 3 overs.
