BCCI is all set to officially announce the IPL 2022 schedule in the upcoming few days. Since IPL 2022 tournament is going to be held during the March-April-May window this year, there is less than one month left for the preparation of the tournament. This time, TATA group is the new sponsor of the tournament and it will be called TATA IPL 2022.

Although BCCI has not announced IPL 2022 schedule so far, some sources have revealed that March 26 is the likely date for the start of the tournament. According to some reports, BCCI planned to begin the 15th edition of the Indian Premier League on March 27, 2022.

However, the broadcaster Star Sports wants BCCI to prepone it to March 26, since it’s a Saturday. If IPL 2022 commences on Saturday, there can be a doubleheader on the next day on Sunday. Hence, the tournament will witness a grand opening with three matches scheduled on weekends. Hence, it might attract more viewership and the attention of fans.

Moreover, tournament broadcasters Star has informed commentators in an official mail to keep their availability for the tournament from March 17 to June 7, 2022, i.e. 10 days from the start of the tournament and 5 days after the tournament. Therefore, the tentative days for the IPL 2022 are March 26 to June 2.

Since there are 10 teams in IPL 2022, a total of 74 matches will be played during the tournament. The format will be similar, i.e. double round-robin format. Each team will face other teams twice during the league stage. The top 4 teams will qualify for playoffs.

Earlier, due to a surge in COVID cases within the country in January due to the third wave of Coronavirus, BCCI was planning to schedule the tournament outside India. Sri Lanka and South Africa were the possible options BCCI was looking for. The last two editions of IPL took place in UAE.

However, since the COVID condition inside the country is under control now and there are just a few thousand active cases now, BCCI is planning to conduct the tournament in India only. However, the tournament will not take place across different venues, as it will incur risks due to flight travel.

According to reports, BCCI is going to conduct IPL 2022 within Maharashtra and Gujarat across 6 venues. 4 venues in Mumbai and 1 Pune might host the league stage matches while the four playoff games including the final will be conducted in Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium.

Wankhede Stadium, Brabourne Stadium, DY Patil Stadium, and Jio Stadium are the 4 possible venues in Mumbai where the matches can be played. Jio Stadium-the home ground of Mumbai Indians team- is yet to get a clearance from the broadcast team for hosting the games. Pune’s MCA Stadium is also one of the possible venues with its proximity to Mumbai city.
