Mumbai Indians star batsman Suryakumar Yadav is unlikely to be available in the first match of the team against Delhi Capitals on March 27 as the player hasn’t completely recovered from his injury.
Suryakumar, 31, sustained a hairline fracture on his thumb during the T20I series against West Indies last month and was subsequently ruled out of the Sri Lanka T20I matches.
Suryakumar Yadav to miss first IPL match for Mumbai Indians: BCCI sources
He is currently undergoing his rehabilitation process at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru and sources have revealed that he might not be fit to play the first IPL match for the five-time champions.
“Surya is currently at the NCA doing his rehabilitation. He is well on his way to recovery but there is a possibility that his participation in the opening game will be a real touch and go affair,” a senior BCCI source privy to developments told news agency PTI.
“So there could be a possibility that he might be advised by the board’s medical team to not risk playing the opener,” he added.
Suryakumar Yadav to be fit for Mumbai Indians’ second match
Suryakumar was one of the four players retained by Mumbai Indians in the IPL retention window. It is expected that he will play the second match against Rajasthan Royals on April 2.
“I think by the second MI game, he would be 100 per cent match fit. It is likely to be more of a precautionary measure if he doesn’t play the first game,” the source said.
Suryakumar was bought by Mumbai Indians in the IPL auction 2018 and played for them in four seasons where he scored 1733 runs for them from 50 IPL games.
Suryakumar is a brilliant player of stroke play and maintained a balance in MI’s batting line-up but had a poor outing in the last season where he amassed 317 runs from 14 games. But the franchise has shown their faith in his skills backing him on his batting prowess.
