Former India cricketer and batting legend Sunil Gavaskar has expressed doubts that Punjab Kings will end their title drought this season. He continued,  This time, I don’t believe the team they’ve created has an impact player.

Punjab Kings (PBKS) were among the franchises with a good set of players on paper before the tournament, which witnessed significant changes in the squad makeup of all franchises.

The PBKS purchased players such as Shikhar Dhawan, Kagiso Rabada, Jonny Bairstow, Liam Livingstone, Shahrukh Khan, and Rahul Chahar over two days. Mayank Agarwal, who will also head the side in the 2019 edition, and spinner Arshdeep Singh had already been retained by the team.

Punjab Kings Can Surprise Few Teams, Says Sunil Gavaskar

Sunil Gavaskar, a former India cricketer, and batting star have expressed concerns that Punjab Kings will end their title drought this year. The PBKS is one of only three franchises (out of the original 8) to have never won the IPL.

“One of the teams that have yet to win the championship is Punjab Kings. This time, I don’t believe the team they’ve assembled has an impact player. However, this could work in the side’s favor. There’s less pressure when there aren’t any,” says Sunil Gavaskar

The former Indian batsman went on to explain that a team must be in a “constant cycle” of winning in the shortest format and that he isn’t keen on PBKS being title contenders just yet.

“Because there is less pressure on the players, they are free  to approach the play.” Punjab Kings, I believe, have the potential to surprise a few teams in this regard. Is it possible that they will take home the trophy? That is highly unlikely. “You have to be in that regular cycle of winning in a T20 format,” Gavaskar explained.

The Indian Premier League’s 2022 season kicks off on March 26 in Mumbai, with previous year’s finalists Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders meeting.

Punjab Kings kicking off their campaign on March 27 against Royal Challengers Bangalore.
