Former India chief selector MSK Prasad has said that the young Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) express pacer Umran Malik should not be fast-tracked to the India National Cricket Team and he needs to be groomed through a systematic process.
Umran Malik has been one of the most talked-about names in the country in the last few weeks. The young pacer possesses ability the to consistently clock the deliveries at over 150 kmph. So far in the Indian Premier League 2022, Umran has bagged 15 wickets, including a 4-wicket haul and a 5-wicket haul.

Meanwhile, Prasad feels that Umran needs to be groomed properly because if he gets fast-tracked to the team and fails he will be dejected.
“I feel Umran Malik should be groomed through a systematic process rather than fast-tracking into the Indian team. I know that clocking 150 kph-plus is never easy. But if you pick him for international duty and if he doesn’t do well, he will be dejected and will be nowhere,” Prasad told The Federal.
He added that a full domestic season and a couple of India A tours will develop him into a good bowler like Mohammed Siraj. He said:
“So, a full season of domestic cricket and a couple of India A tours will help him to develop into a good bowler similar to Mohammed Siraj.”
At the moment, I am really enjoying watching him – MSK Prasad on Umran Malik
Former India chief selector added that pacer Siraj was able to perform well in Australia during his first tour because he had gained experience from India A games.
“So if Umran Malik goes on two to three India A tours, that will help him to get matured as a bowler. Siraj bowled very well in his first full Test tour to Australia. He could do that because he had gained the experience of red-ball cricket by picking close to 50 wickets for India A.”
Prasad also said that Umran will last longer in Indian cricket only if he goes through a proper grooming process. He further credited Sunrisers Hyderabad for backing the Jammu & Kashmir pacer.
“I know that very few people have that ability (to bowl 150 kph-plus). By grooming him through a process, there are chances that he will serve Indian cricket for a longer period. At the moment, I am really enjoying watching him. Credit should be given to the Sunrisers’ Hyderabad team management because they backed him,” Prasad added.
