Former Indian opener Wasim Jaffer has named potential replacements for injured Chennai Super Kings (CSK) seamer Deepak Chahar in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022.
Deepak Chahar was bought by the Chennai Super Kings for a whopping INR 14 crore at the Indian Premier League 2022 mega auction in Bengaluru. However, reportedly, he will be missing a significant portion of the IPL 2022 due to the right quadriceps injury he suffered while bowling in the T20I clash against West Indies in Kolkata.
Speaking on ESPNcricinfo’s show ’Runorder’, Wasim Jaffer, picked Tushar Deshpande, Simarjeet Singh and Mukesh Choudhary as Chahar’s potential replacements.
“We could see MS Dhoni giving confidence to the younger guys, the uncapped guys whether it’s Tushar Deshpande, Simarjeet Singh who bowls for Delhi in the powerplay [or] Mukesh Choudhary – he’s a left-armer who bowls at decent speeds… The Mumbai wickets will need a little bit of pace so these guys can bowl.”
You, Will, Be Missing A Lot Of Wickets In The Powerplay Overs – Aakash Chopra On Deepak Chahar’s Absence In CSK
During the same interaction, the cricketer-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra said that there is no replacement for the pacer and if there was his replacement he wouldn’t have been sold for INR 14 crore. He added that CSK will be missing Chahar’s services in the powerplay overs but it is not the only way to succeed in T20 cricket. He elaborated:
“Honestly, if there was a replacement, he wouldn’t have gone for ₹14 crores. This is how simple that is. Secondly, we tend to overemphasize and focus on ‘this is what we are missing.’
“Yes, you will be missing a lot of wickets in the powerplay overs but is that the only way to succeed in a T20 game? Yes, it is an important component – you pick up early wickets and suddenly you’ve got a fantastic start. But isn’t there another formula to do well as a team? That’s what CSK will be thinking right now.”
