The BCCI planned to expand the league this year and thus, 2 new teams were added to the IPL setup. The addition took place through a transparent bidding process as the Sanjiv Goenka group took over the Lucknow Supergiants franchise while a private CVC Capital company took over the Gujarat Titans team.

All the 10 teams were allocated a pool of INR 90 Crores to build their team through retention and auction. The 8 old teams were allowed to retain a maximum of 4 players with not more than 3 Indian players and not more than 2 overseas players. The 2 new teams were allowed to retain a maximum of 3 players from the draft with not more than 2 Indian players and not more than 1 overseas player.

While the Lucknow Supergiants went ahead with KL Rahul, Marcus Stoinis, and Ravi Bishnoi as its retentions, the Gujarat Titans went for Hardik Pandya, Rashid Khan, and Shubman Gill.
