It Was Nice To Play A Small Role In Popularising IPL: Brendon McCullum
It was 18th April 2008, when the first ball was bowled in the Indian Premier League. The state was set for a game-changer of a tournament. Two teams, Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bangalore were up against each other.
Kolkata was led by Sourav Ganguly and RCB was led by Rahul Dravid. Both of them are legends of the game in their own rights.
But the game is known for Brendan McCullum’s 158 on the opening day of the tournament. Nothing could have set the stage for the tournament better than a blistering knock in the shortest format of the game.
The knock took everyone to take notice of the new format of the game.
I Want Other Batters To Score A Century For KKR As Well: Brendan McCullum
McCullum who is now the head coach of KKR is the only KKR player in the history of the tournament to have ever scored a century. Apart from that 158 in the inaugural match of the tournament, no other KKR batter has ever hit a century for the franchise.
Now being the coach, McCullum wants it to change. In a video posted by the official IPL handle, he told David Hussey, fellow coach at the franchise, “well we need to work on that 2nd hundred as I’m the coach, hopefully, we will see many more hundreds at some stage throughout this tournament.”
Talking about his knock, he said, “well I don’t remember much, it’s a bit blurry, but I remember batting with Ganguly, Ponting and you throughout the innings. I was 0 of 8 but then I started hitting and it came off, luckily it was in the stars I guess, with the little bit of fighting and a little bit of luck, it came good.”
KKR are struggling this season having won 3 games and losing as many. On the 15th anniversary of the IPL, they will be up against Rajasthan Royals and would hope to change their fortunes around.
