Rajapaksa, who came in to bat at number three after Agarwal and Shikhar Dhawan built a solid foundation for his team with a 71-run first-wicket stand and a match-winning 43 off 22 balls on his IPL debut.

Jonny Bairstow, the first-choice wicket-keeper batter, hammered two fours and four sixes in his 22-ball 44-run performance. With 1 over to spare, Punjab Kings snatched the goal.

Rajapaksa also believes the Punjab team has the talent to win the IPL for the first time this season. Punjab Kings had a good chance to win their first title in 2014, but the George Bailey-led side lost to Gautam Gambhir’s KKR by three wickets in the final in Bengaluru.

“This is a crucial time for us. The Punjab squad has yet to win a championship. This is the best platform to use, and this is the best option. The foundations have been established, and we’ve set certain goals.”

The Shreyas Iyer-led KKR will face Punjab Kings at the Wankhede Stadium on Friday, with both teams aiming for their second win of the tournament. Punjab Kings’ season began with a five-wicket victory over RCB in their opening match.
