IPL 2022: Not Important Where You Play, More Important Is How You Play - Wasim Jaffer On No. 3 Position For KKR
Former Indian cricketer Wasim Jaffer opined that a player’s position doesn’t matter but it’s the intent that does. Recently, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captain Shreyas Iyer stated that he would love to bat at No.3 after playing match-winning knocks for India at the same position.
However, having a particular role for the national team doesn’t mean the franchises also have to employ the same strategy. Therefore, Iyer’s batting position will not matter as long as he plays with intent.
“I don’t think the franchises will agree to let players bat lower down as the role is for India. Shreyas Iyer even said that day that he likes to bat at No.3. I think it’s not important where you play, it’s important how you play.”
“So if he is batting at No.3 and scoring runs, I think the selectors and the management will be happy,” Jaffer said a week ahead of the 15th edition of the IPL.
“I prefer Virat Kohli batting at No. 3” – Wasim Jaffer
Speaking about the same position with regard to Royal Challengers Bangalore, Jaffer felt that Virat Kohli should drop down to No.3 as that is his best position. Kohli takes time to build his innings and No.3 is the right slot to do so.
“I prefer Kohli batting at No. 3. I feel he can pace the game very well from there whether he comes to bat in the powerplay or after that. He’s somebody who takes some time initially and then his strike rate progressively goes up.”
“In the powerplay, it seems as he forces himself a bit to hit by using the crease which I don’t think is his game. He’s obviously been successful as well but I think he plays better at No. 3,” Jaffer mentioned.
The IPL 2022 season kicks off on March 26 with KKR facing off against CSK.
