Former India coach Ravi Shastri made a bold prediction about Virat Kohli, the captain of the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). Kohli should open for RCB, as per Shastri, but it depends on the side’s balance.

Should Kohli bat at No. 3 or continue to open for RCB in IPL 2022? Fans of the Royal Challengers Bangalore have been asking themselves this question ahead of the start of their season.

2016 was one of Kohli’s most memorable IPL seasons. He scored 973 runs at an average of 81.08 and a strike rate of 152.03, including four centuries and seven half-centuries, the highest by a player in a season.

Kohli had started the season for RCB as an opener. With an eye on the 2021 T20 World Cup, he returned to the batting position for RCB, although he only managed 339 runs in 15 innings at 28.9 and a strike rate of 119.5, studded with three half-centuries.

If Virat Kohli starts the innings in IPL 2022, I’m confident the Orange cap will be in danger: Ravi Shastri

Kohli had only won the Orange Cap once before, in the 2016 season.

In an interview with  earlier this week, Shastri backed Kohli to open for RCB, but noted that it depends on the side’s balance.

“It depends on the team’s balance,” Shastri stated. “I’m not sure what their middle order is like, but if they have a very good middle order, there’s no harm in Virat opening.”

Kohli will begin alongside skipper Faf du Plessis, giving RCB a much-needed quality opening duo. Anuj Rawat, a young Indian with little international experience, will bat at No. 3 before Glenn Maxwell and Dinesh Karthik. If Kohli bats one down, the RCB batting order will remain strong.

RCB will begin their IPL 2022 campaign against Punjab Kings on March 27 at Navi Mumbai.
