Former Indian men’s cricket team head coach Ravi Shastri named three potential candidates who could lead India in future based on their leadership performance in the upcoming IPL 2022 season.
Rohit Sharma took over the captaincy reins of the Indian team in all three formats after Virat Kohli stepped down from the Test captaincy role in January. Kohli had also relinquished the T20I captaincy at the conclusion of the T20 World Cup in November 2021 and was axed from ODI leadership ahead of the South Africa tour.
KL Rahul was named Rohit’s deputy in all three formats and was also elevated to the skipper’s role during the South Africa tour (in Rohit’s absence) but India lost all four matches – three ODIs and one Test- under the Karnataka player’s captaincy.

Rahul will lead Lucknow Super Giants which is one of the two new teams to feature in the IPL 2022. Rishabh Pant replaced Shreyas Iyer as the skipper of Delhi Capitals last season after the latter suffered a shoulder injury and was ruled out of the first phase of the tournament.
Iyer was released by the Delhi Capitals ahead of the IPL 2022 auction, where Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) roped his services for a whopping sum of INR 12.25 crore. Iyer replaced Eoin Morgan as the new captain of the franchise.
India will be looking for a solid captain for the future: Ravi Shastri
Shastri said that the Indian team management and selectors will have a keen eye on Rahul, Pant and Iyer in IPL 2022 to decide India’s future captain.
“Virat is not being captain anymore, but Rohit has also been outstanding, especially in white ball. India will be looking at who will be captaining the team (in future) — there is Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul.
“India will be looking for a solid captain for the future and here is the opportunity,” Shastri said on Tuesday during a press conference organised by Star Sports.
The IPL 2022 will commence on March 26 with defending champions CSK will take on Kolkata Knight Riders at the Wankhede stadium in Mumbai.
