Former Indian head coach Ravi Shastri believes the spin duo of Ravichandran Ashwin and Yuzvendra Chahal will be effective at the Wankhede stadium in Mumbai where Rajasthan Royals take on Royal Challengers Bangalore in their next match on Tuesday.
The Royals have won two out of two games in the season so far, They now face an RCB side led by Faf du Plessis who beat KKR in their previous game. They narrowly escaped a loss as Dinesh Karthik kept his cool to finish the game for Bangalore. Previewing the RR vs RCB game for ESPN Cricinfo Shastri said that the spin duo will be effective on the otherwise batting-friendly Wankhede track.
“Absolutely. And I was very happy with Chahal’s bowling. He knew he had to take risks in between. The match was stuck in such a way that his job wasn’t to contain runs but also to take wickets. The risks he took were brilliant and they paid off” said Shastri.
Shastri further lauded the veteran Indian off-spinner for dismissing the young Tilak Verma in Rajasthan’s previous game against Mumbai Indians. Verma scored 61 off 33 balls and was keeping Mumbai in the game till he was playing.
“Ashwin as well – when he got hit for the reverse sweep six by Tilak Varma, the slow, flighted delivery he bowled which looped and dropped was a brilliant ball. These two spinners can do the job – both contain and take wickets” Shastri said.
Still, early days in the tournament, but the Royals have looked like the most complete team in this IPL so far. Jos Buttler scored his second IPL ton against Mumbai to help the Royals post a big total. The Royals bowlers restricted the opposition for 170/8 winning the game by 23 runs. They have played two games and won both of them defending.
Rajasthan Royals Are Playing Better Cricket: Ravi Shastri
Shastri concluded his interaction by keeping The Royals ahead of Bangalore in this crucial contest between the two teams. RR are topping the points table at the moment and would look to consolidate their position with another win.
“Rajasthan are playing better cricket. But if [RCB] wins the toss at Wankhade and Hazlewood picks 2-3 wickets at the start then anything can happen” Shastri concluded saying.
