IPL 2022: Sunil Gavaskar Suggests Glenn Maxwell Can Be Given Responsibility Of Captaincy For RCB

Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar insisted that Australian player Glenn Maxwell could well be made the captain of the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) team ahead of the IPL 2022 season.
RCB intended to recruit their next captain in the IPL 2022 mega auction but apart from Faf du Plessis and Dinesh Karthik, they lack options. Looking at the retained players, Gavaskar believes that Maxwell could become a different player if given the captaincy.
“I think if Glenn Maxwell is given the responsibility then a different kind of Maxwell will be seen in IPL. Last year he batted brilliantly probably keeping the mega auction in mind, but he was retained after that, which was good, I guess, for him,” Gavaskar told Sports Tak.

Notably, Maxwell is the captain of Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League (BBL). He has led the team in the past few years and has also signed a new four-year contract with the Melbourne franchise.
“So if Maxwell is given the captaincy, he will score more and play better” – Sunil Gavaskar
Maxwell is a naturally aggressive player and such players can have even better judgment if there is the responsibility of captaincy on their shoulders. As per Gavaskar, Maxwell falls under the same category and could be a great choice to lead the side.

“We have often seen that players who bat well but score 30-40 runs quickly and get out without getting the job done- especially when suppose the team requires 70 or 80 runs more. But when these same players are given a responsibility then they played well showing better shot selection. So if Maxwell is given the captaincy, he will score more and play better,” Gavaskar added.
Director of Cricket Operations at RCB, Mike Hesson, has revealed that the franchise hasn’t yet had a clear discussion on who will lead the side.
