Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) CEO, Venky Mysore, revealed that he wanted to have Shreyas Iyer in his team for a long time and his wish was finally fulfilled in the IPL 2022 mega auction. The franchise shelled out INR 12.25 crores to acquire the services of the 27-year-old batter.
Heading into the new season, Iyer was also made the captain of the team and is likely going to be the face of the franchise. His recent success against Sri Lanka further cements his reputation, and Mysore couldn’t be more elated to see the rising star join the KKR squad.
“I have to tell you this. We’ve been eyeing Shreyas for years now and for the first time made a pitch for him in the very first year that he had made himself available in the mini-auction. At that point Delhi outbid us and we couldn’t do much more. Thereafter, I had even suggested the idea of a trade but it was rejected, and rightly so.”
“This time around we were determined to get him. And when we did there was a sense of real elation around the table. We had got our captain and a serious match-winner. At this young age, Shreyas has already achieved a lot and he will only get better with time,” Venky told.
Venky Mysore’s thoughts on KKR’s leadership group
Venky went on to express his thoughts on the leadership group they have managed to assemble, claiming that Iyer will never have any trouble leading the side as he has so many experienced players to rely upon.
“Now with Aaron Finch, we have Australia’s white and red ball captain in our ranks. Andre Russell has captained his CPL franchise and Sunil Narine is a superb leader in his own right.”
“Finally in Ajinkya Rahane, we have someone with serious leadership experience. Each one of them can help Shreyas if need be and that’s something we are really pleased with,” Venky mentioned.
