Former New Zealand all-rounder Daniel Vettori believes that Chennai Super Kings (CSK) won’t make a big fuss about missing bowling all-rounder, Deepak Chahar, for whom they shelled out INR 14 crores in the IPL 2022 mega auction.

Chahar sustained a hamstring injury in a T20I against the West Indies last month, putting his participation in the IPL under the clouds. If he is unable to recover from his injury, Vettori thinks that CSK will just move on as they have a strong squad assembled.

Every other team might make a big deal out of it but I don’t think Chennai does. I think Chennai just moves on and they understand they can just fill some pieces.

Chennai are so pragmatic about things that they just say, ‘OK we are missing a good bowler but we’ll replace him with this, this and this and off we go.’ I think they are one of the few teams that can survive spending 14 crores on a player and just moving on. That’s Chennai which is an amazing place to be,” Vettori said in a conversation with ESPNcricinfo.

Chahar was the go-to man for MS Dhoni in the powerplay and his exclusion will change their gameplans. Nevertheless, Vettori suggested the names of two pacemen who can perhaps fill in for the 27-year-old Indian.

If he does (miss some games), it’s a huge loss. I think they’ll have to reconfigure their overseas bowlers and [see] whether Adam Milne can get a game or Chris Jordan as well – those two overseas bowlers could be the two that can potentially come in and whether that means someone like [Devon] Conway missed out and they’ve to bring [Robin] Uthappa in…

“But I don’t think they can replace him with a domestic bowler, they need to replace him with an international bowler,” Vettori pointed out.

CSK will begin its campaign on March 26 against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).
