West Indies superstar Andre Russell came back to form for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) as they almost chased down Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) 220 runs in Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium, in their last match of the IPL 2021.

After losing four easy wickets at the start, and then getting reduced to 31/5, KKR were helped back into the game by Dinesh Karthik (40) and Andre Russell’s (54)  81-run partnership for the 6th  wicket. Russell was in the best of the form in this season, as he had not performed optimally with either the bat or the ball in IPL 2020 for KKR.

Russell slammed 54 in just 22 balls with 3 fours and 6 sixes to his name, but was bowled by Sam Curran behind his legs as he left a ball that hit the leg stump.

I Was Very Emotional And I Didn’t Know How To Go To The Changing Room And Face All My Teammates: Andre Russell

Russell left the field begrudgingly and was caught by cameras sitting on the stairs to the pavilion with his head down, after his meek dismissal. He sat there even though Pat Cummins almost took them home with an amazing 66* in 34 balls with 4 fours and 6 sixes including hitting Sam Curran for 30 runs in an over.

“Well, I was very emotional and I didn’t know how to go to the changing room and face all my teammates after leaving a ball and getting out bowled like that. You know, the job is not complete, and I wanted to take the team over the line. So I think the emotions got the best of me but staying strong,” Russell told the KKR website, responding to some tweets from supporters.

“Well, when you get out, and you know the job is not done, you tend to be angry and the Hulk can come out. Last night was different. I was very emotional and disappointed. I wanted to take it home so badly. I was heartbroken,” Russell said in response.

KKR will next face Rajasthan Royals on April 24 in Mumbai.
