KKR head coach Brendon McCullum hailed the youngster Venkatesh Iyer for having a great impact on the side and credited him for contributing to the change around for KKR. Venkatesh Iyer has been one of the finds of the tournament this season as the tall left-hander has been amazing at the top of the order as well as has been contributing with the ball as well.
KKR made a dramatic turnaround in the UAE phase of IPL 2021, having finished seventh in the first phase to end up in fourth place at the end of the points table. They won the eliminator and the qualifier 2 to progress to the finals but unfortunately had to lose out to CSK by 27 runs in a massive chase.
Brendon McCullum Explains The ‘Venkatesh Iyer Game Plan’ That Changed KKR Fortunes
Brendon McCullum mentioned the incredible story of Venkatesh Iyer, who was accustomed to playing the next game in the India phase until the tournament got suspended. However, it helped him immensely to train a lot more, and McCullum reckoned that his style of play is different from others. However, he added that Iyer shouldn’t change for anyone as he can be very effective with his own methods.
“Venkatesh Iyer has been an incredible story. He was actually going to play in the next game after what turned out to be our last game in India, but the break came at the right time there in a funny way. It gave him the opportunity to get a couple of months of cricket under his belt.
“Then it was just a matter of bringing the game that he owns. The ‘Venkatesh Iyer Game Plan’ which is an aggressive intent. He is a big presence, a tall man, plays the game with a kind of a cavalier streak. It is so important to hold on to that because he might be challenged to change his methods,” Brendon McCullum told after the finals.
Brendon McCullum Feels Venkatesh Iyer Should Remain Himself
Brendon McCullum mentioned that Venkatesh Iyer should not focus on bringing flamboyance to his game and rather concentrate on being himself in the side. He added that Iyer will have an excellent future and credited him for being the catalyst for KKR’s turnaround.
“He might not be the most consistent with his flamboyance, but I hope he remains the Venkatesh Iyer we have seen so far. He has got a big future in this game, and he is a very intelligent man. I thank him for all his efforts. He was a big catalyst for our turnaround this season,” he added.
Venkatesh Iyer finished with 370 runs in 10 games and proved to be a match-winner for KKR.
