Former Indian batsman Sunil Gavaskar reckoned Rajasthan Royals (RR) all-rounder Chris Morris has been underperforming and hasn’t lived up to his price tag. Gavaskar also mentioned it wasn’t just the IPL where he has fallen short, but also on the international stage.

RR has been knocked out of the IPL 2021 in the league stage. They finished in seventh place, but a lot of it could be put down to the lack of their best players – Jofra Archer, Ben Stokes, and Jos Buttler. South African, Morris, had to step up, but he failed quite miserably.

There were so high expectations of him when Rajasthan picked him, and I know it’s always not possible to live up to the high expectations. He is just the kind of cricketer who has always had the promise but very seldom has delivered in his entire cricketing career. It is not just about this IPL. There have been high hopes of him when he has played for South Africa, but he hasn’t quite lived up to expectations,” Gavaskar said to Star Sports about Morris.

“Maybe there are fitness or temperament issues with Chris Morris” – Sunil Gavaskar

The 72-year-old Gavaskar further stated that the mental aspect was probably an issue when it came to Chris Morris. It is hard to live up to everyone’s expectations, especially when a franchise dishes out a whopping INR 16.25 crores to buy you.

Maybe there are fitness or temperament issues because often you have the talent but not the temperament, and that doesn’t help you. You might succeed in the odd game, but if you want to be consistently successful, your temperament and talent needs to be married,” Gavaskar added.

In 11 matches he has played for RR this season, Morris picked up 15 wickets, but he was pretty expensive. With the bat, he only managed to contribute 67 runs while batting in the lower order.
