Delhi Capitals prevailed in the super over against David Warner and co. in Chennai as SunRisers Hyderabad lost a game of fine margins. Kane Williamson played a valiant knock of 66 off 51 balls in pursuit of 160 on a tricky pitch; however, he hardly had any support from the other end. David Warner, who could conjure only a single-figure score, stated that it is a tough loss to take in and credited his players for putting up a good fight.

Shikhar Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw gave Delhi Capitals a dreamy start to the innings, notching up a fifty stand. Rashid Khan delivered a breakthrough by dismissing Shikhar Dhawan, followed by Prithvi Shaw losing his wicket for 53 after a horrible mix-up with Rishabh Pant. Captain Pant and Steve Smith joined hands to add a crucial 58-run stand before the former perished. The 20th over proved vital as Steve Smith managed to hit 14 runs to set 160 to win for the SunRisers.

Jonny Bairstow was in fine nick against and unleashed clean hits one after the other; however, David Warner departed to a fine throw by Kagiso Rabada from point. Bairstow perished for a well-made 38 off 17 balls and mistimed a shot to mid-on, where Shikhar Dhawan took a simple catch. The rest of the innings merely centered around Kane Williamson, who held his own without much support from the other end.

It was Jagadeesha Suchith, whose cameo helped them get close and eventually tie a game. Left-arm spinner Axar Patel took the responsibility of bowling a super over and did immensely well. Though Williamson hit a boundary, David Warner could not manage one and his failure to ground the bat over the crease at the non-striker’s end in the final ball cost Hyderabad one run. Rishabh Pant also conjured only one boundary and took the Capitals over the line with Shikhar Dhawan in the last ball, scoring the required eight runs.

I thought the way the bowlers came back after the powerplay was fantastic: David Warner

David Warner pointed out that it is a tough loss to take and credited the bowlers for pulling it back after the powerplay. Warner especially praised Vijay Shankar, who performed well despite not being a strike bowler. The southpaw admired Bairstow and Williamson for doing their roles well and refused to discredit Virat Singh, who managed only four runs. David Warner addressed Manish Pandey’s axing as the selectors’ call and lauded Delhi Capitals for bowling well in the middle overs.

“It’s a tough one. I thought the way the bowlers came back after the powerplay was fantastic. Vijay is not one of our strike bowlers, but he was fantastic. Johnny at the top and Kane batted deep but… It’s on the selectors. Harsh call [to drop Manish Pandey]. You can’t discredit Virat. They bowled fantastically in the middle and brought it back. If you hit the ball to a world-class fielder, you get run-out nine times out of ten,” Warner told in the post-match presentation.
