Chennai Super Kings (CSK) were bested by their arch-rivals Mumbai Indians (MI) in a thrilling and high-scoring match at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on May 1, 2021. CSK, who batted first, put on 218 on the board, which MI chased down with 4 wickets in hand thanks to Kieron Pollard’s blistering innings of 87* in 34 balls with 8 sixes and 6 fours.

While Faf du Plessis (50 in 28 balls) and Moeen Ali (58 in 36 balls) set the stage for the big-hitters to come and explode in the death overs, Ravindra Jadeja, who slammed a record 37 runs against the RCB a couple of matches back, contributed just 22 runs in this encounter.

In comparison, Ambati Rayudu came in as a hot missile and exploded on MI bowlers, making 72* in 27 balls with 7 sixes and 4 fours to his name as CSK put on 218/4 in 20 overs. CSK coach Stephen Fleming shared his views of Jadeja’s subdued innings in a match where 437 runs were scored.

“He just didn’t get away,” says CSK coach Stephen Fleming on Ravindra Jadeja’s 22-ball 22

Ravindra Jadeja could only hit 2 fours in his 22* in 22 balls against MI, while Rayudu was going berserk over MI bowlers as Trent Boult gave 42 runs, Dhawal Kulkarni gave 48 runs and Jasprit Bumrah recorded his worst ever IPL figures of 1/56 in 4 overs.

“He just didn’t get away. But at the other end, it was high scoring. So, sometimes it works that way that one person going incredibly well and the other person turns over the strike. So, we looked at the partnership. The last 5-10 overs were very good,” CSK coach Fleming said on Jadeja’s knock in the death overs against CSK.

However, his knock didn’t hurt CSK more as the three-time IPL champions scored 82 runs in the last five overs of the match. Ravindra Jadeja only managed to score 19 runs off 13 balls while batting in that period.

On the other hand, he added 102 runs from 48 balls along with Ambati Rayudu, which was more important for Fleming, as Jadeja kept feeding Rayudu the strike during their partnership. Chennai Super Kings still are the no.1 team on the IPL 2021 points table with 5 wins in 7 matches and 10 points to their name.
