Rishabh Pant had a decent start to his captaincy career in IPL. The 24-year-old led Delhi Capitals to the playoffs in his first season incharge as the team’s leader.
However, Capitals bowed out of the tournament after losing both the qualifiers round against Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders, respectively.
Rishabh Pant replaced Shreyas Iyer as Delhi Capitals captain in IPL 2021
Pant was appointed as Delhi Capitals captain ahead of IPL 2021 after regular skipper Shreyas Iyer was ruled out owing to a shoulder injury in an international match.
Iyer returned to the tournament in the UAE leg, but the Delhi Capitals team management and owners decided to continue with Pant as captain for the remaining season.
Under Pant’s leadership, the Delhi outfit topped the league stage with 20 points before they went down in the knockout stage.
Rishabh Pant could be the captain of Delhi Capitals for a few years: Michael Vaughan
Former England captain Michael Vaughan believes Rishabh Pant will continue to lead the franchise for the next few years.
“I think Rishabh Pant will carry on (as captain). I don’t see why you wouldn’t carry on with Pant. He has led the team to the semifinal. Ricky Ponting probably feels that Rishabh Pant has got something in him, and Pant could be the captain for a few years,” Vaughan told Cricbuzz.
“So Rishabh is captaining again. Delhi is going to have some really tough decisions to make. You can argue that six or seven players should be retained, and how they get down to three, they could look to Ricky Ponting and Co for that.
“There will be a few players available for whom the franchises will be licking their lips. However, I think Delhi has the best squad in terms of depth,” he added.
Delhi Capitals’ quest to win their elusive IPL title will continue, and they will be regrouped like other teams in IPL 2022 mega auction.
