I Was Under Pressure In The Middle Overs; Credit To Avesh Khan And Tom Curran To Restrict Them To 188: Rishabh Pant

Rishabh Pant had a dreamy start to his captaincy career as Delhi Capitals comprehensively beat the Chennai Super Kings at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Shikhar Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw set the foundation with a 138-run opening stand as Chennai Super Kings set them to get 189 runs after being sent to bat first. Rishabh Pant felt delighted with the Capitals for doing exceptionally well with the options they had to open their account in IPL 2021.
Delhi Capitals’ new ball-bowlers in Avesh Khan and Chris Woakes made early inroads by removing Faf Du Plessis and Ruturaj Gaikwad cheaply. On his IPL return, Suresh Raina looked in flawless touch and added a couple of half-century partnerships with Moeen Ali and Ambati Rayudu in no time. Suresh Raina’s departure and MS Dhoni’s two-ball duck brought Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran to the crease. The two dished out some lusty blows to lift the Super Kings to 188.

Shikhar Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw ecstatically raced towards the target as they cut down more than half the target in no time. Shaw got a reprieve when on 38 as Mitchell Santner dropped a relatively straightforward catch. He went on to make 72 before Dwayne Bravo denied the Capitals a perfect chase. Shardul Thakur came back in the 17th over to get rid of Dhawan for 185 to delay the inevitable. All-rounder Marcus Stoinis holed out to deep mid-wicket when the Capitals required only three runs, but Pant finished it with a boundary after that immediately to cruise to a seven-wicket win.
Prthivi and Shikhar did well for us in the Powerplay: Rishabh Pant
“It always feels good when you get the win in the end. In the middle phase, I was under some pressure. But Avesh and Tom did well in the middle to restrict them to 188. It was very special walking out for the toss with MS. He has been my go to man. I have learnt a lot from him. We were thinking as to what we will do without Nortje and Rabada and I thought we had to do with the options we have. No, there was no effort for the NRR as it is still early stages in the tournament. Prithvi and Shikhar did well for us in the powerplay. They kept it simple and played some good cricketing shots,” Rishabh Pant said in the post-match presentation.
