Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) captain David Warner blamed himself after his team suffered their 5th loss in 6 matches in the ongoing IPL 2021 after Chennai Super Kings (CSK) defeated them in Delhi by 7 wickets.

Batting first after winning the toss, the David Warner-led side made 171/3 in 20 overs on a tough pitch and against a disciplined CSK bowling. Warner struggled his way to 57 with 3 fours and 2 sixes, while Manish Pandey made 61 runs with 5 fours and 1 six. Their 106-run partnership for the second wicket took almost 14 overs and both players struggled to accelerate on a slow pitch and some top-notch CSK bowling and fielding.

It was only because of Kane Williamson’s quick 26* and Kedar Jadhav’s 12*, that SRH put on a fighting total on the board.

However, it proved to be inadequate as Chennai Super Kings (CSK) openers Faf du Plessis and Ruturaj Gaikwad smashed the SRH bowlers to all parts of the Feroz Shah Kotla ground. The duo added 129 runs in 13 overs with Gaikwad making 75 in 44 balls and Du Plessis making 56 in 38 balls.

Though the duo got out, it was enough for other CSK batsmen to take them past the finishing line in 18.3 overs and 7 wickets in hand. And with this victory, MS Dhoni and his men also regained their no.1 position on the points table.

Though David Warner tried his best, he couldn’t hit the big shots when the time came to accelerate and his strike rate only went past 100 just before he got out. He couldn’t get into any rhythm against both spin and pace despite hitting 3 fours and 2 sixes.

“I take full responsibility for the way I batted, it was really slow, found a lot of fielders and I got frustrated. The way Manish batted was exceptional. Kane got us to a respectable total, but I take full responsibility as it was a total below par. I probably hit 15 good shots to the fielders, I couldn’t do much about it. They are the ones that make or break your innings. It gets frustrating as a batsman when you find the fielders. We had 170 on the board but we couldn’t take powerplay wickets and it’s always tough (to come back) on a good surface like this,” David Warner said in the post-match interview.

He lauded the CSK opening duo Faf du Plessis and Ruturaj Gaikwad and also spoke on Kane Williamson batting at no.4 in the coming matches as well.

“Their two openers batted really well, but we fought well in the end. Felt like you could squeeze a bit after those wickets but they were always ahead in the game. He (Kane) was going to bat four no matter what, that’s where he bats, that is his job, just that I soaked up too many balls. It’s about being positive, it’s a good batting surface. We have a day game here as well. 170 is about a par total at night, but things could be different in a day game. From a batting perspective, we need to find the gaps and need to be positive. We are a bunch of fighters. The guys will be hurt by this, but they’ll be up and about,” David Warner signed off.

SRH will next face Rajasthan Royals in a day game in Delhi on May 2nd.
