In the grand finale of IPL 2021, three-time champions Chennai Super Kings will face two-time winners Kolkata Knight Riders at the Dubai International Stadium on Friday. The tournament which started on April 9 in India, halted for more than four months, comes to a conclusion on October 15 in UAE.
It is the battle of two World Cup-winning captains. MS Dhoni led CSK’s revival after a disappointing last season, to becoming the first team to qualify for the playoffs this season.
Captained by Eoin Morgan, KKR have made an inspirational comeback from the India leg, with just 2 wins in 7 matches to winning 5 out of their next 7 games in the league stage in the UAE.
Dhoni’s magic in the last over helped CSK triumph over Delhi Capitals in Qualifier 1 and reach another IPL final, while KKR’s bowlers exploited the Sharjah pitch to handicap the RCB and DC batters in Eliminator and Qualifier 2 to take them in their first final since 2014.
On the head-to-head front, CSK are well ahead having defeated KKR in 16 out of their 24 clashes, including both their league encounters this season.
However, KKR will take boost from the fact that the last time the two sides met in an IPL final, Gautam Gambhir led KKR to their maiden title in 2012, that too in front of the Chennai crowd.
