Gautam Gambhir has chastised Rajasthan Royals (RR), Sanju Samson, for slowly falling into the trap of inconsistency in the ongoing IPL 2021. He started off with a scintillating century against Punjab Kings (PBKS), but since then, his scores have been 4, 1, and 21 as RR has only 1 win from 3 matches in the tournament.

On April 22, 2021, RR faced RCB and Sanju Samson had a huge responsibility on his shoulders after openers Jos Buttler and Manan Vohra fell for single-digit scores. He scored an attractive 18-ball 21 with 2 fours and 1 six but then fell to Washington Sundar, going for another big hit. RR managed only 177/9 in 20 overs.

This inconsistency has also cost Samson his place in the Indian team as well as he scored just 83 runs in 7 T20I matches with Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, and Ishan Kishan leaving him behind in the race for the wicketkeeper-batsman position in Men in Blue.

While speaking during an ESPNCricinfo show, Gautam Gambhir said that brilliant players, like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and AB de Villiers are always able to follow up their big scores of 80 with another 30 or 40 runs. However, Gambhir mentioned that with Sanju, it’s either a big score or nothing.

“If you look over the last many IPLs, consistency is an issue. He starts very well but it’s either nothing or everything. So your graph shouldn’t fluctuate this much. A good player’s graph always remains in the middle. If you look at Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, or AB de Villiers, who are all brilliant players, if they make 80-odd runs they don’t score 0, 1, or 10 in the next few innings but contribute with a knock of 30 or 40-odd runs.

But if you look at Sanju Samson’s graph, either he scores an 80-90 or nothing at all. If there is so much fluctuation then somewhere it’s an issue of the mindset,” said Gambhir.

This is evident from the fact as in IPL 2020, he started with two scores of 80 plus, but could only muster 375 runs in the tournament, as his team, RR finished at the bottom of the points table. Samson’s batting talent has been acclaimed by experts everywhere, but he has a problem with scoring them consistently.
