The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) emerged victorious in the IPL 2021 season opener against defending champions, Mumbai Indians (MI) in a last-ball thriller by 2 wickets. RCB chased down the target of 160 runs to open their account on the points table as the Rohit Sharma-led side suffered a 9th successive defeat in their first match of the tournament.

Pacer Harshal Patel took a five-wicket haul derailing the renowned MI finish. He dismissed the likes of Hardik Pandya, Ishan Kishan, Krunal Pandya, and Kieron Pollard in his brilliant 5/27 denying the 5-time champions a finish they have liked – Patel gave away just 1 run in the last over Mumbai’s innings.

While Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers were invariably going to garner attention, it was RCB’s big-money signing, Glenn Maxwell, who after a disappointing season last year with Punjab Kings (formerly Kings XI Punjab) was to be put under heavy scrutiny. And he did come off good for Virat Kohli’s team in the chase.

AB de Villiers was shifted to number 5, as the Australian came in after the fall of the second wicket. He staged a half-century stand with the skipper before both the batters were dismissed. For RCB, as has been the case on numerous occasions, de Villiers came to their rescue to bring victory to their footsteps.

Royal Challengers Bangalore and Punjab Kings involve in an entertaining social media banter

Apart from cricket, there’s is always plenty of social media hoopla around the IPL, in particular surrounding the Royal Challengers Bangalore. The RCB took a dig at the Punjab Kings franchise when Maxwell struck his first six of IPL 2021 – he didn’t hit a single maximum last season – which went for 100 meters!

The Punjab Kings admin replied by thanking the Royal Challengers Bangalore for their current skipper, KL Rahul, along with Chris Gayle, Mandeep Singh, and Sarfaraz Khan, who all were part of RCB till 2017.

The RCB admin retorted back with a sly shot of their own: RCB trolled Punjab for their rebranded jersey, logo, and the color of it which is akin to that of the Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Expect both the franchises to continue their banter throughout the season, and entertain the fans off the field as well. However, their fans would be hoping for their maiden title this year more than anything else.

Punjab Kings commence their campaign on Monday against Rajasthan Royals, who also is a heavily engaging social media franchise.
