Rajasthan Royals Director of Cricket Kumar Sangakkara hailed skipper Sanju Samson for leading the team from the front.

Samson took over the reins from Australia’s Steve Smith as the team captain in IPL 2021 after the latter switched to Delhi Capitals. Currently, Samson is the second-highest run-scorer in the tournament having scored 452 runs from 11 matches at the strike rate of 141.25.

However, Rajasthan Royals haven’t tasted enough success under Samson’s leadership as they are present in the seventh position with eight points and are in a challenging position to win their remaining games.

Rajasthan Royals lost to Royal Challengers Bangalore by seven wickets on Wednesday in Dubai which marks their third loss in a row after starting the UAE leg with a victory against Punjab Kings in a thriller match.

Although Rajasthan Royals openers Evin Lewis (58) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (31) gave the team a fabulous start with quick runs as their partnership stretched for 77 before the Indian player departed in the ninth over.

Samson could only add 19 runs from 15 balls as he holed out to Devdutt Padikkal at deep cover off Shahbaz Ahmed’s bowling.

Royals batting collapsed poignantly as the team could add only 58 runs in the last 10 overs and lost eight wickets in that period to post a below-par score of 149/9 in the first innings.

“We do have one on one chat about a lot of things. India’s aspirations come at a time when the IPL is over. Our chats are primarily IPL focused, not just his batting, it is about the captaincy, the team, and what we want to do. He is a very good player, he has done exceptionally well for us this season,” Sangakkara said in a virtual post-match press conference.

Samson was not included in India’s T20 World Cup squad after playing 10 T20I matches and a good run in IPL. But the former Sri Lankan captain believes that Samson will get a longer run with the Indian team.

“I am sure that Sanju’s aspirations for playing for India will come true and he will get a longer run in the future. He is good and ready anytime he is picked,” Sangakkara mentioned.

Rajasthan Royals will play their next match against Chennai Super Kings on October 2 at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi.
