Delhi Capitals (DC) coach Ricky Ponting has praised the new captain of the team Rishabh Pant and his leadership abilities after DC made a winning start to their IPL 2021. He even compared Pant’s thinking process to that of Virat Kohli and Kane Williamson.

Pant was appointed as the captain of DC after the then captain Shreyas Iyer was ruled out of the tournament due to shoulder injury and Ponting mentioned that Pant needs to get more involved in the game and praised his thought process as well.

The Way He Thinks, He (Rishabh Pant) Is Actually A Bit Like Virat Kohli Or Kane Williamson: Ricky Ponting

Rishabh Pant’s debut as DC captain went off smoothly against the Chennai Super Kings as DC chased down CSK’s 188 quite easily as Shikhar Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw thumped half-centuries and added 138 runs for the opening wicket.

“Someone like him (Pant), you want him to get more involved in the game as early as possible, and bat for as long as possible. The way he thinks, he is actually a bit like Virat or Kane. Now, if they are in at the end, you are going to win more often than not no matter how many runs are required,” DC coach Ricky Ponting said.

Pant impressed many with his captaincy abilities during his first match as captain against MS Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings as Ponting feels that the southpaw is very energetic. He also praised Pant for improving his keeping skills which he displayed against England recently.

“He is energetic and you can hear that from behind the stumps, he loves being in the contest and he is a winner. He’s just brilliant. The comparisons are always going to be always there for someone who bats like that. Gilly’s keeping is better than Rishabh’s no doubt about that. The way saw him keep on turning pitches in India (vs England), I thought he kept way better than I thought he could,” Ponting said.

He further mentioned that if Pant keeps improving his glovework, he can easily be India’s first-choice keeper for the next decade or so.

“If his keeping improves, with his batting, he could be India’s keeper in Tests for next 10-12 years no doubt,” said Ponting on Rishabh Pant.

DC will next face Rajasthan Royals on April 15, 2021 in Mumbai.
