Former Indian cricketer Nikhil Chopra reckoned that captaincy has played a huge role in Sanju Samson’s consistent performances in the IPL 2021. Samson is the current orange cap holder of this season with 433 runs in 10 matches.

He has been at the forefront of Rajasthan Royals’ (RR) batting this season and has also shouldered the responsibility of captaining the side. Samson has scored one century and two fifties this season at an average of 54.12 and a healthy strike rate of 140+.

He wasn’t selected in the Indian squad that will play in the T20 World Cup mainly due to his inconsistency. The exclusion might have fueled the RR skipper to perform his best and he has certainly lived up to the talent he has in IPL 2021.

Against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Monday, Samson played a stroke-filled 82 off 57 balls but his effort went in vain as RR failed to defend the total of 164/5. Nevertheless, it was a glimpse into the wide array of strokes the talented Kerala batsman has.

“He will break into the Indian team” – Nikhil Chopra

Speaking about the 26-year-old Samson, Nikhil Chopra claimed that the batsmanship has gone up a few notches ever since Samson took over as RR captain. He believes that Samson will soon break into the Indian team again and cement his spot this time around.

This is the first season where Sanju Samson has performed consistently. Otherwise, he performs in some games and gets out cheaply in others. Since he became a captain, his batting has become even better. If he keeps on batting like this, he will not just knock on the door but break into the Indian team. He has the ability to win games,” Chopra said.

Samson has scored two fifties in his last two matches and the RR franchise will hope he can continue performing. As for RR, every loss from here on will hurt their chances of making it to the playoffs.
