An Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise official, while speaking to the Indian Express, revealed that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is not in a position to ask the franchises to reduce the workload of “targeted Indian players” by resting them during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023, which is reportedly set to kickstart on April 1, 2023.

On Sunday, the Board of Control for Cricket in India convened the review meeting of the India National Cricket Team in Mumbai. BCCI president Roger Binny, secretary Jay Shah, head coach Rahul Dravid, NCA head VVS Laxman, captain Rohit Sharma and the outgoing chief selector Chetan Sharma attended the meeting. The issues of player availability, workload management and fitness parameters were discussed at length during the meeting.

One of the key recommendations made by the board following the review meeting was that the National Cricket Academy (NCA) will work in tandem with the IPL franchises to monitor the workload of the key Indian players, who have been shortlisted for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023.

“Keeping in mind the Men’s FTP and preparations for ICC CWC 2023, the NCA will work in tandem with the IPL Franchisee to monitor the targeted Indian players participating in the IPL 2023,” BCCI said in an official media release.

Team India have a jam-packed schedule in 2023 and with the 50-over Cricket World Cup being held later this year, the BCCI wants the targeted players to manage their workload during the Indian Premier League 2023 to avoid any potential injuries in the build-up to the marquee tournament.

A recently published report in the Indian Express has provided some clarity on the collaboration between the National Cricket Academy and the Indian Premier League franchises.

In the past, a few big franchises have declined to share any data with the BCCI’s NCA, but this time around they are ready to share data regularly.

Also, a franchise official has said that the BCCI can “monitor the workload and ask for any data” but they cannot restrict a particular player’s participation in the Indian Premier League.

“The BCCI cannot ask the franchises to rest a player for any IPL game. They can of course monitor the workload and ask for any data to be shared, but they cannot fix a cap and say a certain player can play only X number of matches or can bowl only X number of overs,” a franchise official told the Indian Express.

Notably, the Cricket Australia (CA) and the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) ask the IPL franchises to share data with them regularly and the prospect of workload management is already mentioned in their No Objection Certificate (NOC), which is mandatory for the participation in the cash-rich league.
