Sri Lankan athletes frequently draw attention to themselves due to their outstanding performances. Sri Lankan cricketers, including Lasith Malinga, Mahela Jayawardene, and Kumar Sangakkara, have consistently had a significant impact on the Indian Premier League’s development in a variety of ways.

The 2023 IPL auction will take place in Kochi on December 23. Unlike the previous season’s mega-auction in February, the BCCI will conduct a mini-auction for the forthcoming season.

Ahead of the auction, all ten franchises released a list of players they retained and released from the squad.

A total of 85 players were released ahead of the auctions, and some of the big names include Mayank Agarwal, Kane Williamson, Kieron Pollard, Dwayne Bravo, and Pat Cummins. While the players mentioned above are likely to receive heavy cash in the auction, several players fear going unsold.

Let’s have a look at the 3 Sri Lankan players who might go unsold in the IPL 2023 auction.

Dushmantha Chameera

Dushmantha Chameera has demonstrated that when healthy, he is capable of terrorizing the opposing batters with his pace and aggressive lengths. With nine wickets from 12 games for the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the previous season, Chameera was equally remarkable.

The Sri Lankan speedster was released by LSG, and Mumbai Indians would undoubtedly think seriously about signing him. His proficiency with the long handle would be an added benefit.

However, due to recent injury issues, Dushmantha Chameera has been in and out of the Sri Lankan team, which could also hamper his chances in the upcoming IPL auction.

The bowling-all-rounder Chamika Karunaratne was picked by Kolkata Knight Riders at the IPL 2022 Auctions but had been warming the bench for the two-time champions.

The Sri Lankan has been very poor with the bat recently, scoring just 19 runs in his last 4 innings. With the overseas tag along with him, it will be very difficult for him to have any bidding in the upcoming IPL 2023 auction.

Charith Asalanka

Charith Asalanka did not secure a contract at the IPL 2022 Auction, despite playing for Sri Lanka. The batting all-rounder had a starting bid of 50 lakh when he entered the auction.

Since Asalanka is familiar with the sub-continental conditions and had a big T20 World Cup performance for Sri Lanka, it shouldn’t come as a surprise if one of the 10 teams signs him as a replacement. However, it seems a far-fetched idea at this moment as Sri Lankan players are not preferred by the franchises in recent years, and that too for a mini-auction.
