IPL 2023 Auction: "That’s Not How You Build Teams"- Dodda Ganesh Furious Over Mayank Agarwal's Non-Retention

Punjab Kings (PBKS) took a bold step by releasing Mayank Agarwal from the squad. PBKS management removed Agarwal from the captaincy just a few days before the IPL Retention and made Shikhar Dhawan the new skipper for the 2023 edition. The team finished in 6th position out of 10 teams and had a topsy-turvy tournament.

Agarwal had a below-par season where he scored only 196 runs in 13 matches and his decision to bat in the middle order didn’t go well as planned. Agarwal was the bowler’s captain and made sure that the team didn’t panic in tough situations which were his stand-out feature.

Former India Cricketer Dooda Ganesh took to his social media handle and made some interesting comments on Mayank Agarwal. “Mayank had four really good seasons for Punjab. One bad season and he is been released. That’s not how you build teams. This is where MI and CSK are a class apart. The kind of rapport the two most successful franchisees build with their players, is commendable #IPLRetentions” said Dodda Ganesh.

Great Chance for PBKS

PBKS has a massive purse of 32.2 Crores and they have 3 overseas slots remaining as we can expect a completely new squad for the 2023 edition. With Shikhar Dhawan as the skipper, the side can be more competitive and fearless. The franchise hasn’t won a single edition where their best season came way back in 2014 when they had reached the finals under the captaincy of George Bailey.

PBKS need someone who can hold the team together as they start well but succumbed to pressure at the later parts of the stage. There is also a chance that PBKS may buy back Mayank Aggarwal in the auction as his base price was at a whopping 12 crores. He can be used in the team as a backup opener in the case Bairstow is not fit. It would be interesting to see whether the management goes for Indian talent as that is one more area where the team is falling apart.
