Former Indian Opener, Gautam Gambhir’s remarks followed a recent announcement from the BCCI in which it was stated that the National Cricket Academy (NCA) would keep an eye on the workload of players selected for the 2023 ODI World Cup, which will be held in October and November in India.

The Indian men’s squad would be eager to win at least one of the two competitions this year, the World Test Championship (WTC) and the ODI World Cup, in order to end the lengthy ICC trophy drought.

This will be India’s fourth time hosting the tournament, and the first time it will be the only host. They shared the tournament’s hosting duties in 1987, 1996, and 2011.

Having won the trophy on home soil in 2019 after overcoming New Zealand in a thrilling final at Lord’s, England enters the competition as the defending champions.

“World Cup happens only once in four years”: Gautam Gambhir

Former opener Gautam Gambhir believes India players should prioritize playing ODIs with less than ten months to the 50-over World Cup and that it would be okay if some of them skipped the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL) games.

“If the franchise has to suffer they have to suffer. Indian cricket is the main stakeholder, not the IPL. IPL is just a by-product. So, if India goes out and wins the World Cup, that is the bigger ovation, that is the bigger ring” Gautam Gambhir said.

“For example, if an important player does miss the IPL games so be it because IPL happens every year and the World Cup happens only once in four years. So, for me, I think winning the World Cup is far more important than winning the IPL” Gautam Gambhir Added.

BCCI has already shortlisted 20 players for the Indian squad. The final team for the World Cup will be selected from these players.
