The participation of the 25-year-old India National Cricket Team wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 is in doubt after his horrific road accident and the Delhi Capitals (DC) might announce a new captain for the upcoming season of the marquee T20 league.

Rishabh Pant met with a road accident when he was driving from New Delhi to Roorkee on Friday, December 30, to pay a surprise visit to his family. He reportedly dozed off while driving and his Mercedes Benz car collided with the divider on the Delhi-Haridwar highway and it caught fire.

After the horrific car accident, Rishabh Pant was taken to Saksham Hospital Multispecialty and Trauma Centre and was later shifted to the Max Hospital in Dehradun. Pant’s condition was stable, but he suffered several injuries, confirmed BCCI.

“Rishabh has two cuts on his forehead, a ligament tear in his right knee and has also hurt his right wrist, ankle, toe and has suffered abrasion injuries on his back,” the BCCI said in an official media release.

Rishabh Pant sustaining a ligament tear is not good news as it takes at least three to six months to heal completely, as per experts, which means he will be out of action for a very long time and could miss the IPL 2023, which is reportedly set to kickstart on April 1, 2023.

Delhi Capitals (DC) will name a new captain if Pant gets ruled out and they have a few good options like David Warner in the squad, who could lead the side in the absence of the star wicketkeeper-batter.

Talking about Rishabh Pant’s injuries, Dr. Qamar Azam, who looks after the sports injury department at AIIMS-Rishikesh, said that Pant may take at least 3-6 months to recover from the ligament injury or even more than 6 months if it’s severe. He said (as quoted by News18):

“Pant will take at least three to six months to recover from the ligament injury. And if it’s severe, he may take more time. Further evaluation can be based on his detailed injury report.”

Also, a medical team member attending to the wicketkeeper-batter said (as quoted by Times Of India):

“His condition is being monitored by Dr Gaurav Gupta of the orthopaedics department. Pant is stable, not suffering from any life-threatening injury. His mother is with him in the hospital.”

Meanwhile, the reports of the CT scan of Rishabh Pant’s brain and spinal cord have returned “normal”, informed the BCCI officials.
