The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) bought their first overseas player at the Indian Premier League 2023 mini-auction in Reece Topley, who plays for Surrey in domestic cricket. RCB were engaged in a bidding war with Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings to acquire the services of the England pacer.
Topley became RCB’s 7th overseas player in the squad after Faf du Plessis, Finn Allen, Josh Hazlewood, Glenn Maxwell, Wanindu Hasaranga and David Willey. The tall left-arm England pacer will most likely serve as a backup for Australian star Josh Hazlewood in the RCB squad.
Reece Topley has never participated in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and his first stint will be with the RCB in IPL 2023. However, the left-arm pacer brings a plethora of T20 experience with him as he has played 131 T20s and has picked 168 wickets at an average of 22.01, an economy of 8.22 and a strike rate of 16.0.
Reece Topley has represented Melbourne Renegades in the Big Bash League (BBL), Islamabad United in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) and Oval Invincibles in The Hundred.
Overall, Reece Topley, who made his international debut for England in 2015, has played 22 T20Is and has bagged 22 wickets at an average of 29.50, an economy of 8.30 and a strike rate of 21.3. He was named in England’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 squad but missed his team’s title-winning campaign due to a freak injury.
