Former Zimbabwe cricketer Andy Flower recently disclosed his motivation for becoming the head coach of the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). Andy Flower said that the franchise’s lack of titles played a crucial role in his decision to accept the position.

Andy Flower was appointed as the head coach of the Bangalore-based franchise in August last year. The former wicketkeeper took over from Sanjay Bangar following the team’s failure to qualify for playoffs in the previous season of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

The 55-year-old, despite limited IPL success, brings a wealth of coaching experience from various T20 leagues worldwide. Notably, he guided England to victory in the T20 World Cup in 2010 and achieved success in leagues like the PSL, the men’s Hundred, and the ILT20.

Really Excited About That Challenge – Andy Flower

Andy Flower expressed enthusiasm for the challenge of coaching RCB and highlighted the potential of the team’s talented squad. Flower mentioned that they can achieve notable success in the tournament.

“I’m really excited about that challenge (of joining a side that is yet to win an IPL title). It is one of the main reasons I wanted to take this job. It gives me a very exciting opportunity to see if we can do something special with RCB. We have got a really exciting group of players. I think our squad is strong. We have got some great experience in the dressing room,” Flower told the Hindustan Times during the ILT20.

The Bangalore team is still among the three teams that haven’t secured the title despite participating in every season. Although RCB made it to the finals in 2009, 2011, and 2016, they were unsuccessful on each occasion. In 2022, they narrowly missed the final, losing to the Rajasthan Royals in Qualifier 2.

We Will Attack The Game – Andy Flower

Andy Flower, previously coaching the Lucknow Super Giants, emphasized the importance of team cohesion over individual brilliance for IPL success. Flower stated that the team will employ an attacking approach, aiming for playoffs and ultimately the title.

“All-rounders, we think, are going to play a really important part in the tournament. The opportunity of winning a tournament is right there in front of us, but my personal view of taking on a challenge like that is always simplifying the route,” Flower further stated.

“We want to play a type of game that we will be proud of. We will attack the game, and that will give us a really good chance of getting through to playoffs. Once you get through, then you’ve got a good chance at the title. So, there are steps along the way that we must take.”

The franchise’s morale is on the rise following the women’s team’s triumph in the Women’s Premier League 2024, where they secured victory over the Delhi Capitals. The Smriti Mandhana-led side claimed their first-ever title in the league’s second season of the WPL.

The Faf du Plessis-led team will face off against the MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings in the IPL 2024 opener at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Friday, March 22.
