Former India pacer S Sreesanth feels Gujarat Titans bowlers have more freedom under a young skipper Shubman Gill than Hardik Pandya. Sreesanth also feels that Shubman Gill does not tell bowlers how to bowl like Hardik Pandya used to.

Shubman Gill is the new skipper of Gujarat Titans in IPL 2024. Hardik Pandya parted ways with the team ahead of the season. He led the side in the first two editions- driving the team to the title once in the 2022 edition.

Under Gill, GT won their opening game against Mumbai Indians by 6 runs. However, they faced a setback against Chennai Super Kings in the next game on Tuesday, losing by a huge margin of 66 runs in Chennai.

More freedom to GT bowlers under Shubman Gill feels S Sreesanth

While speaking on FanCode, cricketer-turned-commentator S Sreesanth said he believes Gujarat Titans bowlers have more freedom under new skipper Shubman Gill as he does not tell bowlers how to bowl.

“There is no Hardik [Pandya] in Gujarat Titans to tell the bowlers what to bowl. Sometimes you need to give the bowler the freedom to bowl. This time the captain is Gill, and I’m sure Ashish bhai (Ashish Nehra) will say ‘let them bowl,” Sreesanth said.

Sreesanth also highlighted the advantage of having a young captain saying that bowlers will take more responsibility.

“Bowlers will also take responsibility with a young captain and sometimes, this is the advantage of having a young captain,” Sreesanth added.

Shubman Gill struggled with the bat in the first two matches

Meanwhile, Shubman Gill has struggled with the bat in both the opening games in IPL 2024. He got out for just 8 runs off 5 balls in the previous match against Chennai Super Kings on Tuesday.

The GT skipper was slightly better in the opening game vs Mumbai Indians, hitting 31 runs off 22 balls. However, Gill was the highest run-getter last season and is yet to perform at his best in IPL 2024.

GT defeat MI but lose to CSK

As a skipper, Shubman Gill did a fantastic job by defending a 169-run target against Mumbai Indians in the opening game of IPL 2024. GT bowlers restricted MI to 162-9 in the 2nd innings, snatching a surprising victory. However, his tactic failed against Chennai Super Kings, who outplayed his team by a huge margin of 66 runs.

Chennai Super Kings set a mammoth target of 207 for GT at their home ground Chidambaram Stadium. GT could only reach 143-8 till the final over with a top knock of 37 by Sai Sudharsan. GT will now face Sunrisers Hyderabad on Sunday, March 31 at home.
