Mumbai Indians, the joint most successful IPL outfit along with Chennai Super Kings, chose an out-of-the-box way to announce that Ishan Kishan has joined the MI camp ahead of IPL 2024. Kishan had been out of action since November 2023 when he featured for the Men in Blue in 3 of the 5-match home T20I series against Australia.
Since then, a lot has unfolded in the life of Ishan Kishan as he witnessed his career go upside down. But in IPL 2024 where he will be the first-choice wicket-keeper batsman for MI, the 25-year-old will have a chance to revive. To even get looked at as an option for India’s T20 World Cup 2024 squad, Kishan has to score over 500 runs in the season.

In a video, shared on MI’s official Instagram handle, Ishan Kishan can be seen entering his hotel room and carrying out the flip-bottle challenge in front of a mirror. After 2 successful attempts, Kishan was left baffled when his image in the mirror changed into a ghost.

MI captioned the video by writing, “Dekh liya, team hotel mein aate hi bottle flip karneka natija (Did you see the outcome of doing flip bottle challenge as soon as entering team hote?) #OneFamily #MumbaiIndians @ishankishan23”
The video received positive reactions from fans of the left-hand batter who will have a point to prove this season. Last year, Kishan scored 454 runs from 16 matches at a 142.77 strike rate, including 3 half-centuries.
How did Ishan Kishan lose his BCCI central contract?
After leaving the Indian Test team during their 2-match series in South Africa earlier this January, the wicket-keeper batsman is yet to play competitive cricket. He had asked for a mental health break from the team management who allowed him to leave the tour immediately.
However, what followed afterward was something none of us were expecting. Ishan Kishan was first sidelined from selection for India’s T20I series against Afghanistan before also not finding himself in the Test side against England. He was then asked to play some Ranji Trophy cricket for Jharkhand during the league stages but he refused to do so and trained all alone.
Then a few weeks later, BCCI honorable secretary Jay Shah sent a clear message that centrally contracted players, if not on national duty and are injury-free, should play first-class cricket. And in case any player fails to do so, they will not be considered for selection in the India national team.
Then last month in their annual player retainership 2024 list, the BCCI overlooked Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer for their Ranji snubs and that move sent major shockwaves. While Iyer joined Mumbai to play the semi-finals and final, Kishan’s state team Jharkhand was knocked out of the competition from the group stages, leaving Kishan with nothing to play for.
“Please note that Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan were not considered for the annual contracts in this round of recommendations. The BCCI has recommended that all athletes give precedence to participating in domestic cricket during periods when they are not representing the national team.” – BCCI’s press release read.
