India spinner Kuldeep Yadav starred with the ball against England in the recently-concluded five-match series. He did not get a chance in the playing eleven for the first Test in Hyderabad as India preferred the trio of Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, and Axar Patel.
He was expected to warm the bench for the second Test as well but an unfortunate injury to Ravindra Jadeja saw him earning a recall for the playing eleven. The left-arm spinner responded by taking four wickets in the game as India beat England by 106 runs to draw level in the series. When Jadeja returned for the third Test, India retained Kuldeep Yadav and dropped Axar Patel and the chinaman spinner totally justified the call.
In the last three Tests, he picked up 15 wickets including a five-wicket haul in the fifth Test as India won all three games to complete a 4-1 series win. With Kuldeep Yadav performing well against England, many believe that the left-arm spinner has regained his best form after struggling for months in recent times.
Kuldeep Yadav on MS Dhoni:
Kuldeep Yadav began his international career in a sensational fashion and just blew teams away. He performed not only in India but outside the country as well and he impressed in England, South Africa, and Australia as well. However, he struggled to sustain that form once former India captain MS Dhoni retired from international cricket.
The legendary wicketkeeper-batsman kept guiding Kuldeep Yadav from behind the stumps and played a key role in his impressive displays. However, once Dhoni retired, the Uttar Pradesh spinner struggled with his form and lost his place in the Indian team as well.
Things have improved for him in recent times and he has reiterated how important Dhoni was for him. He said that Dhoni’s presence made things easier for not only him but other spinners too. He also admitted that he struggled to shoulder the responsibility of his bowling alone after Dhoni’s retirement.
“I wanted him to play more because it was very easy for us when we were bowling. After Dhoni retired, my performance with the ball wasn’t great,” Kuldeep Yadav admitted in an interview with Indianexpress.com.
“It happens when a person guides you and that person’s influence is not there anymore, then suddenly everything is on your shoulders. It takes time for you to react to the situation … that probably happened to me. Then slowly you understand and become self-reliant.
“But Chahal and I really enjoyed when Mahi bhai was keeping wickets, he used to give lots of ideas. I didn’t have to think too much when I was bowling. I just had to bowl and he would even adjust the fields. No doubt the time I had with Mahi bhai on the field and even off the field was great,” he added.
