You must have heard the famous IPL catchphrase – where talent meets opportunity. Perhaps for the first time in the IPL 2024 season, this phrase came into life when a 21-year-old Delhi-born right-arm pacer named Mayank Yadav came under the spotlight. The talented pacer had so much pace in his bowling that it was next to impossible for the Justin Langer-led LSG team management to deny him an opportunity.

At first sight, Mayank Yadav seemed to be just another bowler coming through the ranks of India’s domestic circuit but when he got down to the job, everyone was left stunned. Be it the Hindi, English, Bengali, or Haryanvi commentators, the crowd inside the Ekana stadium, or the people watching from home, everyone was baffled as to how such a lean bowler generates such pace.

It was not just about pace, if it had been then Umran Malik would have become the number 1 ICC bowler. It was the line length coupled with a ferocious pace that made Mayank Yadav, a major topic of discussion. If anyone heard the Star Sports Hindi commentary box, the likes of Irfan Pathan, Mohammad Kaif, and Sanjay Manjrekar among others only had one thing to say.

They are extremely proud of the way this youngster has bowled and their hearts are filling with immense pride after seeing him. But did his debut performance make him probable for India’s T20 WC squad? Mayank’s coach Ranji Trophy Devang Gandhi shared his insights.

Devang Gandhi feels Mayank Yadav is on the radar of Indian selectors

It is only normal for a bowler like Mayank Yadav after a performance like that to be touted as probable for the Indian team. With the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 beginning just 7 days after the conclusion of IPL, the chief selectors are keeping an eye on every single match, and every single development.
With that being said, Mayank Yadav’s coach in Delhi’s Ranji Trophy team Devang Gandhi feels that the youngster is already on the radar of chief selectors. Having watched him closely in the nets and during his only first-class match in 2022, Gandhi claimed that Mayank needs to put up such performances consistently.
“Only time will tell, but if he keeps bowling well, he shows good performances, then I am sure he is on the radar of the India selectors. If he keeps performing like he did against Punjab Kings, then a possibility cannot be ruled out.” – Devang Gandhi told Sports Now after LSG defeated Punjab Kings last night.

Mayank Yadav creates a record of his own

With his match-winning performance against Punjab Kings in front of home support, Mayank Yadav created a record of his own. By registering figures of 3/27 from all 4 overs at an economy rate of 6.75, the New Delhi-based pacer was adjudged as man of the match in only his debut outing in the IPL.

That’s a rare feat to achieve and also something that has probably never been done before. Yadav will be in action up next against Royal Challengers Bengaluru on April 2nd at the M. Chinnaswamy stadium.
