Kolkata Knight Riders have received a huge boost ahead of the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2024). They will be able to avail the services of their captain Shreyas Iyer right from the start.

The right-handed batsman had missed the entire season of the IPL last year after suffering a back injury during the Ahmedabad Test against Australia in March. In April, he had to undergo surgery and was sidelined for the entire competition. He returned to action just before the ODI World Cup at home and played a starring role with the bat in India’s dominating march to the final.

However, the back issue resurfaced recently as the star batsman was struggling to bat for long hours. In the recently concluded Ranji Trophy final, he could not even take the field on the last two days of the game due to a back spasm. Unsurprisingly, there were doubts over his participation in the first few games of IPL 2024.

Shreyas Iyer to play IPL 2024 from the start:

Shreyas Iyer has been declared fit to participate in IPL 2024 right from the start, according to a report in the Indian Express. The 29-year-old visited a spine specialist in Mumbai after consultation with the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bangalore and has received the green light. The doctor has reportedly told the batsman he is fit to play although he has been asked to be cautious while stretching his leg.

“He is fit to play; a specialist spine doctor was consulted in Mumbai who has advised him not to stretch his leg too forward while defending the ball. He has joined IPL franchise KKR, and he can play,” a source in the Indian board was quoted as saying.

The update will be a huge boost for KKR who are eyeing a third IPL title this season. The Kolkata-based outfit has not won the IPL since 2014 but will be fancying their chances this year. They have a formidable squad to end their long wait for a third IPL title.

Shreyas Iyer will also be desperate to hit the ground running in the IPL after missing the entire season last year. The right-handed batsman led KKR in 2022 but could not make much of an impression as a captain. KKR finished at the seventh spot in the points table after winning only six of their 14 league games. With the bat, Shreyas Iyer scored 401 runs with the help of three half-centuries.
