Virat Kohli, on Friday (March 22), made his much-awaited return to competitive cricket in the game between Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore in IPL 2024.
It was his first competitive game since January. The former India skipper last played a competitive game during the three-match T20I series against Afghanistan. While he was a part of the India squad for the first two Tests against England, he skipped both games to be with his pregnant wife Anushka Sharma. Last month, the couple welcomed their second child, son Akaay.
And playing his first competitive game since the birth of his son, Virat Kohli created history. The RCB batting superstar added yet another feather to his already illustrious cap by becoming the first-ever Indian batsman to reach 12000 runs in T20s. Virat Kohli needed only six runs to complete the milestone and he did not make any mistake.
Overall, he became only the sixth batter to achieve the incredible feat. The other batters to score 12000 runs in T20s are Chris Gayle, Shoaib Malik, Kieron Pollard, Alex Hales, and David Warner. Gayle is currently leading the list with a staggering 14562 runs in 463 games. On the other hand, Virat Kohli has scored 12015 runs in 377 T20s so far. The only other Indian who has more than 11000 runs in the shortest format of the game is Rohit Sharma who has scored 11156 runs so far.
Most runs in T20s:
- Chris Gayle – 14562
- Shoaib Malik – 13360
- Kieron Pollard – 12900
- Alex Hales -12319
- David Warner – 12065
- Virat Kohli – 12015
Virat Kohli fails to score big:
While Virat Kohli created history during his knock against CSK, he could not convert his start into a big score. The former RCB skipper could only score 21 runs off 20 balls and was dismissed by Mustafizur Rahman after a brilliant fielding effort from Ajinkya Rahane. The right-handed batsman hit one six in his innings.
He will be looking to score big in the upcoming games to strengthen his case for a place in India’s T20 squad for the T20 World Cup. As per media reports, the selectors are not willing to select him and would change their minds only if the veteran batsman enjoys an extraordinary campaign.
