“You’ll always be my captain”- Fans emotional as MS Dhoni hands CSK captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad

Fans on Twitter reacted after MS Dhoni handed over the captaincy baton of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to Ruturaj Gaikwad ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. The young batter will now be leading the team in the tournament from now.

MS Dhoni, who has been captain of the Chennai Super Kings since 2008, will go down as one of the best skippers in the league. He captained the team to five IPL trophies and made the franchise the joint most successful team in the tournament alongside Mumbai Indians

Chennai Super Kings issued a press release and stated: “MS Dhoni has handed over Chennai Super Kings’ captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad ahead of the start of TATA IPL 2024. Ruturaj has been an integral part of Chennai Super Kings since 2019 and has played 52 matches in IPL during this period. The team looks forward to the upcoming season.”

MS Dhoni will go down as the most successful skipper in the league with 133 wins under his belt whereas second best is Rohit Sharma with 87 wins. The keeper-batter won his last game as a captain of the team, which was the final of the IPL 2023 at the Narendra Modi International Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Ruturaj Gaikwad will have massive shoes to fill but under the guidance of MS Dhoni, he will be having a great opportunity to flourish as a leader. The young India batter has a decent amount of experience as a leader as he captains Maharashtra in the domestic circuit.

The move was expected as Ruturaj Gaikwad was touted as a potential replacement for MS Dhoni as a leader. But it’s fair to say that nobody expected change to happen this early. All the eyes will be on the young opener as he takes on the field as a skipper of the team.

Ruturaj Gaikwad’s first assignment as a skipper of the Chennai Super Kings will be against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). The tournament opener will be played at the Chepauk Stadium in Chennai on 22nd March.
