New Zealand batsman Daryl Mitchell will replace Devon Conway in the New Zealand Test squad for the upcoming 2-match Test series against India. Conway broke his hand during the Black Caps’ semifinal against England in the T20 World Cup.
Mitchell is in great form in the T20 format and was the Player of the Match in their come-from-behind semifinal win against the Englishmen. He generally plays in the middle-order in the Test squad and it will be interesting to see if he can replace Conway at the top of the order.
Speaking about the change, head coach Gary Stead said that Conway will stay with the T20 squad before returning home with them next week.
“It’s a shame for Devon to miss out on the first series of the new World Test Championship (WTC) cycle, but it also offers up an opportunity for someone else.”
“Daryl’s versatility means he can cover a lot of batting positions and he’s certainly got plenty of confidence at the moment. He’s proven he can perform in Test cricket and I know he’s excited to rejoin the Test group,” Stead mentioned.
The upcoming Test series will be New Zealand’s first assignment in the 2021-23 WTC cycle and they will look to defend their title with a positive start. The first Test will be played from November 25-29 in Kanpur followed by the second Test in Mumbai from December 3-7.
