Indian opener Shubman Gill heaped praise over New Zealand pacer Kyle Jamieson for his bowling on Day 1 of the first Test.

Gill led India’s charge with a crackling fifty on his return to Test cricket, scoring 52 from 93 balls with the help of five fours and a six.

Kyle Jamieson bowled pretty well today: Shubman Gill

Gill’s brilliant knock was halted by Jamieson in the very first over after the lunch. The lanky pacer bowled a good length delivery that got the inside edge of the batter and crashed into his stumps. Gill said that Jamieson, who picked three wickets in the day, bowled pretty well and called his spell top-notch.

“I think he (Jamieson) bowled pretty well today especially in the first spell, he bowled pretty good areas to me and after lunch, the whole spell that he bowled was top-notch,” Gill said after day end’s play as quoted by NDTV.

“Sometimes, it’s difficult to start knowing when it’s reverse-swinging, and especially after coming back from lunch, I didn’t expect the ball to reverse that early in the game. That’s the thing about Test cricket, you have to read the conditions fast. In this particular innings, I wasn’t able to read that ball well as generally, I wasn’t expecting the ball to reverse,” added Gill.

Shubman Gill credits Ashwin and Jadeja for helping him to prepare for spinners

Gill seemed very comfortable while taking on the New Zealand spin duo of Ajaz Patel and William Somerville. The opening batter credited Indian spinners R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja for preparing him in the nets.

“If you are already playing two of the best spinners in nets, especially in India, it does help, because if you try to negotiate them, you have a much better chance of going in the middle of the match and trying to handle those crucial periods of time,” Gill said.

India were 258/4 at the end of Day 1 against the Black Caps as debutant Shreyas Iyer walked unbeaten alongside all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja (50*).
