New Zealand National Cricket Team head coach Gary Stead has opined that the Black Caps batters will have to adapt to the Indian conditions quickly if they want to earn success against the spin trio of Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin and Axar Patel.

New Zealand lost the T20I series 3-0 against India in the absence of Kane Williamson from the team. However, Kane will be making a comeback in the Test series and will lead the side in the two-match Test series, which will begin November 25 in Kanpur, and the second and last Test match of the series will be played on December 3 at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.

‘We Knew Ashwin & Jadeja Were Going To Become Apparent’, Says NZ Coach Gary Stead On Why NZ Hoped To Bat Longer In 1st Innings

Meanwhile, During a virtual press conference, New Zealand head Coach, while replying to a query from ANI, said:

I think whenever you come here and face the likes of Ashwin, Jadeja, Axar Patel, who are world-class spinners in this environment as well. For us, it’s about being able to adapt quickly to what the surface is telling us and what is right in front of us.”

Gary Stead pinpointed that sometimes the surface doesn’t provide a lot of turn to the spinners at the beginning of the match, but as soon as the match progresses, it starts turning, so they will have to prepare for it and have ” multiple ideas” to overcome the challenge of the spin. He asserted:

Sometimes when you start the match, it may not be spinning too much but it does come later on. So having multiple ideas or ways to challenge the bowlers back will be something that will be important to our group.”

Star left-arm pacer Trent Boult has opted out of the Test series to take some break from cricket and refresh himself. Also, Colin de Grandhomme will miss the Test series due to bio-bubble fatigue.

Talking about Boult, Stead said that he has been a fine bowler for New Zealand for a very long time, but he needed the break to be mentally refreshed. He asserted:

Trent Boult has been a fine bowler for New Zealand for a long long period of time but we made the decision that the best thing for him was to get home in order to be mentally refreshed. I also know India is doing a similar thing with some of their players as well.”

“And I think that’s the sign of the COVID world that we live in. It’s not New Zealand who will miss Boult but I think India will also miss some of their players,” he added
